The Falcons moved above .500 for the first time this season with a 59-53 win over Bishop Ward, at Kansas City Kansas Community College. This was a top of the conference clash with both teams vying for top honor.
With the Falcon’s characteristic frenetic offensive style, they scored consistently through the focal point of our offense, Jaden Monday. There are times his offense is forced, but last night he was more controlled, and lethal. He scored 29 points including sinking six straight of his free throws in the fourth quarter.
The rest of Falcons struggled offensively. Senior, Xavier Marrero, had one of the stranger games of his career, scoring 7 points, only on free throws. Even though “X” struggled on offense, he contributed strongly with seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals. It was his excellence at running the offense and reacquiring the basketball that gave the team its platform for success.
Coach Sollars has the Falcons poised for their first conference championship in a generation. Now its time for the Van Horn basketball team to polish off some of its rough edges. Post defense must get stronger, the team must get mentally stronger, an outside shooter needs to get hot, and offensive shot selection must continue to improve. If the Falcons check off these improvements, they can win a conference championship and battle for a district title.
